oh, we've been doing that - yard waste and food waste together, in Nova Scotia for a long time. I have my own compost pile here on the property but in winter, i must confess to being lazy and using the green bin providing by the county instead - it then gets turned into compost and offered free to members of the community each year. it's pretty much a win / win situation.

What a GREAT idea! I love Portland--the community always seems to be on the cutting edge, whether it's public transportation, sprawl reduction, and now composting food waste. It all makes for a very livable city. This is an idea that needs to be shared with city planners everywhere!
